3 Tips for Great Denture Care

Last updated 6 months ago

Dentures are a great way to restore the look and function to your mouth after you have lost your teeth due to aging, disease, or injury. However, just like natural teeth, dentures require special care to keep them in top shape. Use the following three denture care tips to keep your mouth healthy and happy:

  1. Clean your dentures daily with a solution designed for dentures, available from your cosmetic dentist or pharmacy. You may also use a gentle toothpaste. Cleaning your dentures prevents bacteria from building up that can cause odor, discoloration, and other disruptive problems. Don't use abrasive cleansing solutions, as your dentures may become scratched or damaged. Avoid putting your dentures in boiling water to sanitize them, since boiling may cause warping which can alter the way they fit.

  2. Be careful not to drop your dentures to avoid breakage. Some dentures are made out of materials that might shatter, crack, chip, or break if they are dropped on a hard surface, like your bathroom sink or floor. Handle them carefully and place them safely in their case when they are not in your mouth. This will prevent damage that could change the fit, shape, or function of your dentures.

  3. Don't eat foods that may stain your dentures. Some foods can change the color of your dentures, and not even the best denture cleaners can restore them to their original color. Ask your dentist for a list of foods to avoid, and be careful with substances that would stain natural teeth, like soda and red wine.
